Ħamrun Spartans delved into the transfer market on Monday’s Deadline Day to add another forward into their ranks when they completed the signing of Chris Marlon Ondong, the Times of Malta can reveal.

The Spartans have enjoyed a solid start to their title defence picking up seven points from their opening three matches and head into the international break leading the standings alongside Sliema Wanderers, Birkirkara and Hibernians.

However, the team has struggled a little bit to convert the scoring chances created and coach Alessandro Zinnari has decided to add another option in his forward line.

The Malta champions targeted 31-year-old French striker Ondong who is currently plying his trade in the Montenegro top-flight with Mornar Bar.

The Spartans opened talks with the Montenegrin club and an agreement was reached between the two clubs. Ondong also agreed personal terms with the Maltese club and the transfer is set to be made official by the Malta FA during Monday’s deadline day.

Last season, Ondong made 28 appearances with Mornar, netting seven goals.

Ondong, who also holds Gambia citizenship, is a powerful right-footed forward who can play across the attacking line and boast great physical strength and has the attributes to be an important cog in the Spartans’ formation.

Ondong is expected to arrive in Malta this week to join Zinnari’s squad and could make his debut with the Spartans when the 360 Sports Malta Premier resumes in two weeks’ time against Mosta on September 15.
