Hudson Valley Community College formally opened a $17.5 million STEM Education Center for the 2024-2025 school year in NYSERDA’s Saratoga Technology and Energy Park in Malta, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday afternoon.
The two-story, 14,500-square-foot building will serve more than 1,000 students a year in HVCC’s North Extension Center, which includes new labs for microbiology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology, classrooms, offices and student spaces.
The project, which also includes renovations to the college’s Training and Education Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and Alternative and Renewable Technologies, provides new education and workforce training opportunities in health care, STEM and skilled trades.
Ground was broken on the project in June 2022. Malta is home to the global headquarters of GlobalFoundries, an international semiconductor manufacurer.
“By integrating advanced laboratories and modern technology, we are not only enhancing educational opportunities but also driving regional economic growth,” Hochul said in a statement Thursday. “This project is a testament to the power of collaboration between state, local, and private partners in shaping the future of our workforce.”
The project was supported by a $2.5 million Empire State Development capital grant, $6 million from the State University of New York (SUNY), $1.5 million from Saratoga County, $500,000 from GlobalFoundries and contributions from Northern Borders and the Hearst Foundation.
“This new facility is an integral component of our HVCC North expansion project and an important resource for our students and community seeking training in healthcare, trades and technology,” HVCC Officer-in-Charge Louis Coplin said, adding that it will provide greater access to education and job training in Saratoga County.
