Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri had a personal meeting with PC Clive and PC Aidan, the police officers who were assaulted in Ħamrun last weekend.
During this meeting, the minister promised to strengthen the laws against violence toward police and public officers.
“We don’t only want our law enforcement forces to be respected while carrying out their duties but we want to continue strengthening their rights, rights that the government holds dear and has heavily invested in,” a ministry statement read.
“This is aside from the fact that the Government has continued to invest in the conditions, training, and equipment that law enforcement forces use daily.”
Pleading not guilty but have been remanded in custody after their request for bail was rejected by the courts.
The five people who were filmed assaulting police officers in Ħamrun in a shocking video which went viral over the weekend were this morning brought to court, dragged through the main entrance as a crowd of onlookers watched on.
Five people – Elton Borg, Erica Borg, Kurt Borg, Redeemer Aquilina and Christian Mansueto – were charged today in connection with the assault against the police officers last weekend.
They are pleading not guilty but have been remanded in custody after the request for bail was rejected.
