Gżira United needed a controversial late goal by Christian Saint-Ebisindor to secure a 1-1 draw against Naxxar Lions at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
It looked as though Naxxar Lions were on their way to a vital victory after Luan Sergio headed them ahead.
The Maroons fought back and had several scoring chances but it was Naxxar who were denied by the woodwork from adding a second goal.
That proved costly for the Lions as after having Degran Jackson sent off late on they conceded an equaliser when Saint-Ebisindor, in a clear offside position, headed home the equaliser.
The match was balanced early on with Naxxar taking the lead on 19 minutes.
Edson Farias raced clear on the right and his pinpoint cross found Luan Sergio who headed past Gżira United goalkeeper Justin Haber.
Gżira tried to hit back and four minutes later Alex Alves delivery picked Luis Riascos but the latter was close down by Gilmour Cassar as he was about to shoot.
Naxxar came close to a second goal midway through the second half when Luan Sergio hit a thumping drive that came off the upright with Justin Haber beaten.
Two minutes from time, Naxxar had Jackson sent off for a second booking.
When it looked as though they did just enough to survive Gżira’s onslaught, the Lions conceded the equaliser.
Thiago Espindola’s cross found Saint-Ebisindor, who was in a clear offside position, and the forward headed past Matthias Debono.
