Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie have embarked on a four-day visit to Malta to mark the 60th anniversary of the country’s independence.

During their visit, the couple also plan to celebrate the country’s shared heritage and continue collaboration with the UK.

As the pair touched down in Malta, the Duke and Duchess of Wessex appeared in great spirits as they met with President Myriam Spiteri Debono and her husband Dr. Anthony Spiteri Debono at Grandmaster’s Palace in St George’s Square, Valletta

The visit will be a poignant trip for the couple considering the significance the country holds for the Royal Family. Malta is where the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip spent their years as young newlyweds.

Sophie, 59, looked stunning in a floral white maxi print dress from Gabriela Hearst. Completing the look, the mother of two wore the dress with a belt, a £475 Strathberry crescent shoulder bag in diamond and vanilla and a pair of tan Jimmy Choo pumps.

Accompanying his wife, Edward sported a smart navy suit, paired with a classic light blue shirt.

Edward and Sophie’s trip marks the first royal visit to Malta since the Duke of Kent visited in late 2018.

On Wednesday, Sophie and Edward will visit Villa Guardamangia – the residence the late Queen and Philip stayed when they were newlyweds.

The late couple lived there between 1949 and 1951 when Philip was stationed in Malta while serving in the Royal Navy office. They later visited in 2007 to mark their 60th wedding anniversary.

That day, Edward will also view artefacts linked to UK-Malta relations – including a letter from the late Queen inaugurating the island’s first parliament.

On Wednesday, the Duchess will go on to take part in a panel discussion with the Malta Police Force. This will highlight how to improve its approach to supporting victims of gender-based violence and human trafficking.

The day before, on Tuesday, the couple will embark on a historical tour of the Grand Harbour’s key Second World War sites and meet veterans.
