Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, are currently in Malta to mark the 60th anniversary of Malta’s independence and celebrate the country’s shared heritage and continuing collaboration with the UK.
They arrived in the country, where Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip lived for two years before she ascended the throne, on Monday and have a series of engagements today.
Sophie, wearing a stunning orange floral midi skirt and chic white blouse, and Edward kickstarted the day by officially opening the Submariners’ Walkway in Valetta.
They headed inside the National War Museum where they viewed the current national flag of Malta, alongside the previous version featuring the blue canton that bears a representation of the George Cross.
The couple, who recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, also viewed the letter from King George VI awarding Malta the George Cross.
Edward and Sophie then went onboard a patrol boat during a historical tour to view the key WWII sites in Grand Harbour, Valetta.
Pictures show the couple dropping wreaths at the entrance to the Harbour, to commemorate lives lost during the conflict.
Later on Tuesday, the pair will visit the Malta Maritime Museum where they will hear from Armed Forces personnel and members of the Maltese-UK Veterans’ Association.
Edward will then join young people participating in The Duke of Edinburgh International Award to formally open the organisation’s new headquarters in Malta.
He will also discuss the positive impact of the award founded by his father Prince Philip, The late Duke of Edinburgh.
