The Migrant Women Association Malta (MWAM) is proud to present the “Sewing and Fashion Design Skills” Project Exhibition, showcasing the achievements of asylum seekers, refugees, and migrant women participating in this transformative initiative.

Running from July 2024 to June 2025, the project aims to provide participants with essential sewing and fashion design skills, helping them break employment barriers and achieve economic independence within Malta’s fashion and design industry.

Ten women are currently engaged in the program, which fosters empowerment and social integration while enhancing employability.

Under the guidance of fashion design experts Sarah Portelli and Tonya Lehtinen, participants receive hands-on training in essential techniques such as material selection and sewing.

The program not only hones their technical skills but also builds a supportive community to inspire more women to join future initiatives.

A key aspect of the project is sustainability. By repurposing clothing donated by Mango since 2020, participants practice repairing and reimagining garments, ensuring waste reduction and creativity in their designs.

Over 500 women and families have already benefited from these donations.

The culmination of these efforts will be on display at the STUDIO MWAM Exhibition on 12th December at the Valletta Design Cluster, where participants will present their creations to potential employers, customers, and the public.

This event is not just a showcase of talent but a testament to the empowerment and economic potential of these women.

Supported by the Bank of Valletta, the project team, led by Project Manager Umayma Elamin and Project Officer Intern Stina Spitz, envisions a sustainable future for MWAM. The ultimate goal is to expand the initiative and collaborate with other organisations to continue fostering skills and independence for more women.

The exhibition is open to all, offering an opportunity to witness the participants’ talents and explore unique fashion pieces.

Registration is available through MWAM’s Facebook page and the event registration form.

This inspiring initiative reflects MWAM’s dedication since 2015 to promoting skill development and breaking barriers for migrant women in Malta. Through projects like these, the association continues to foster a future of integration, empowerment, and creativity.
