Sports nutrition is a specialized branch of nutrition that focuses on optimizing performance, recovery, and overall health for athletes and physically active individuals.

In modern sports, the role of sports nutrition has become indispensable as athletes and coaches seek every possible edge to enhance performance, recovery, and longevity in competition.

Advancements in sports science and nutrition research have elevated its importance, making it a critical component in athletes’ training regimens.

“It is crucial because the demands placed on the body during sports and exercise require precise dietary strategies to support energy needs, muscle repair, and long-term health,” sports nutritionist graduate Nicole Sciberras told the Times of Malta.

“For athletes striving for success, adequate dietary intake is essential not only for optimizing performance but also for supporting recovery and ensuring long-term health.”

“Good nutrition involves providing athletes with the specific nutrients and energy required to meet the demands of their sport, which vary depending on its type, intensity, and duration, as well as individual goals and physiological needs.”

“Properly meeting the energy demands of training and competition is crucial to delaying fatigue, promoting physiological adaptation, and aiding recovery.”

“By following a well-balanced diet tailored to their unique nutritional needs, athletes can unlock their full potential and achieve peak performance.”

Sciberras, a national team player for the Malta women’s football team and vice-captain at Hibernians, read her masters in Science in Sports and Exercise Nutrition at the Atlantic Technological University in Sligo, Ireland, thanks to the assistance of the Malta Sports Scholarship Scheme provided by the Government of Malta.

“My interest in studying sports nutrition was sparked by my experiences as an athlete, Sciberras, who is also a coach at the Aloysians Athletics Club, said.

“After going through a period where my body struggled to cope with the demands of training, I became curious about how nutrition could influence performance and recovery.”

“This motivated me to explore how food can make a significant difference in helping athletes meet the physical and mental challenges of their sport.”

Asked about the importance of her course, Sciberras – a former Juventus player as well – explained how it provided her valuable insights of nutrition and how various strategies can be used to meet the specific demands of a sport.

“It has helped me develop key competencies and transferable skills necessary to function effectively as a sports nutritionist.”

By the 2000s, sports nutrition had become a fundamental component of football performance, marking a shift toward a more scientific and structured approach to player health and optimization.

Leading clubs like Arsenal and Milan pioneered advanced nutritional strategies, emphasizing the importance of tailored meal plans designed to meet individual players’ specific needs.

The use of supplements, such as protein shakes and energy gels, became commonplace, providing players with convenient and effective ways to enhance energy levels and support muscle recovery.

On the other hand, in individual sports such as tennis, athletes started to collaborate with professional nutritionists to develop tailored diets that account for individual factors such as body type, metabolism, and match schedules.

Energy management remains critical, with carbohydrates prioritized as a key fuel source during tournaments. High-GI options like bananas, energy gels, and sports drinks are commonly consumed during matches to maintain performance levels.

“While nutrition is increasingly recognized as a key factor influencing performance, there is still significant room for improvement,” Sciberras pointed out.

“Many athletes continue to underestimate how much the right nutrition can enhance not just performance, but also recovery, injury prevention, and overall well-being.

Athletes should receive the necessary nutritional support tailored to their individual needs to reach their highest potential.”
