Ħamrun Spartans have agreed terms to sign Senegalese defender Bacary Sane, the Times of Malta can reveal.
The Malta champions are determined to put behind them a low-key Opening Round which saw the Reds finish in fifth place after a first part of a campaign that saw the team dogged by a string of injuries.
However, during the Top Six of the championship, the Spartans stepped up a gear as they managed to find a lot of consistency and will be looking to be more consistent and set their sights of a top-two placing in the Closing Round to be involved in the championship play-off finals at the end of the season.
The Spartans’ top hierarchy have been working hard to bolster their squad and an agreement in the past week with young Senegalese defender Sane to continue his career with the Malta champions.
The Senegalese defender, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Christmas Eve, is seen as a very promising prospect.
After making his professional debut with Senegalese club Diambars FC he moved to Latvia in June 2023 to join top-flight side Liepaja.
The following year he decided to move to Lithuania where he joined Dziugas.
This year, Sane was a regular member of the Lithuanian top-flight side making 27 appearances.
Sane is expected to travel to Malta this week to formalise his transfer and join Alessandro Zinnari’s team who will resume their preparations ahead of the start of the Closing Round over the weekend.
Sane is set to be the Spartans’ second signing this month as the Malta champions have already unveiled Montenegrin defender Jovan Cadjenovic who has also just ended the season in Lithuania with top-flight club Panevezys.
