Floriana president Johann Said has unveiled new plans to develop the Independence Arena into a stadium with a maximum capacity of 4,000 spectators.

Said told a supporters’ rally that the club’s dream of having their own stadium had moved closer to reality after the club obtained the VO (Voluntary Organisation) status, which is necessary to be given the green light to start their commercialisation ventures.

Showing the architect plans to the club members, he vowed to put the club on a stronger foundation and make it self-sustainable.

Said insisted that the project will transform the area. “The five-star hotels in the area will become six-star after the development of our stadium,” he exclaimed.

He insisted that he will leave no stone unturned until this dream will become a reality.

“The attendances have slumped when the Gzira Stadium was closed down and football moved to Ta’ Qali,” he added.

He argued that football can be regenerated only if the stadiums are built closer to the community.

The Floriana president did not delve into further details but thanked Sports Minister Clifton Grima for providing advice and guidance.
