Gżira United are set to complete the signing of Portuguese midfielder Diogo Barbosa, the Times of Malta can confirm.

The Maroons are working hard to strengthen their squad after a disappointing Opening Round that saw the team miss out on a Top-Six berth.

Gżira United are trying to bring in a number of overseas players to add more quality to the squad after parting ways with several players during the past fortnight.

Gżira United has already signed Serbian goalkeeper Marko Copic and Dutch fullback Shaquill Sno and has agreed terms with Portuguese midfielder Barbosa.

The 28-year-old midfielder has an eye-catching CV having played for the youth teams of Benfica, Porto and Watford before moving to Sporting Lisbon.

During his career, he had a sting in Cyprus with PO Xylotymbou and Mt Druitt Town, in New Zealand before heading to England and donning the colours of Darlington.

In February 2023, he moved to Bulgaria where he donned the colours of top-flight side Botev Vratsa.
